The one kind of brain training with twenty-year evidence

Most "brain training" claims rest on short studies showing people get better at the exercise itself. The ACTIVE trial is the exception: it followed 2,802 older adults for two decades, and its 2026 follow-up found that one training type — and only one — was linked to fewer dementia diagnoses.

Twenty-year dementia outcomes by type of brain training in the ACTIVE trialSpeed-of-processing training with booster sessions was followed by a 25 per cent lower rate of dementia diagnosis than the control group. Reasoning training and memory training showed no significant difference.Dementia diagnoses after 20 years, by training typeHow much lower the diagnosis rate was than the control group. Speed-of-processing training with booster sessions was the only arm with a significant long-term effect. Our free Double Take game trains the same skill: finding a target in your peripheral vision while identifying one in the centre, at a speed that adapts to you. Full study context is on the game page.

What each game actually trains

The games are not interchangeable. Each leans on a different system, which is the practical reason to rotate between a few rather than settle on a favourite.

Which cognitive function each BrainDrop game trainsA grid of five games against five cognitive functions. No single game covers everything: the word games train language and working memory, the maze trains spatial reasoning, and Double Take is the only one that trains processing speed. What each game actually trainsNo one game covers the row.
